The mission of the University of Michigan Department of Dance

of the School of Music, Theatre & Dance is to provide a comprehensive training in performance, choreography, and theory.  With the overall aim of fostering creative expression, the department draws upon the legacies of 20th century American modern dance and ballet, embracing the abundant theoretical, historical, and interdisciplinary resources available on campus and in the community.  The department is committed to bridging the conservatory with our major research university in its effort to invigorate contemporary dance forms.

Whether by dancing in their first year with the Freshmen Touring Company, performing onstage at the Power Center, or creating a multi-media concert premiered in the Duderstadt Video Studio, dance students accomplish their educational and creative goals by developing discipline, independent thinking, creative problem solving, collaborative skills, technological competencies, and an appreciation for diversity and community

responsibility.  The fundamentals and the finer points of dance

technique and choreography are equally stressed. Our ultimate

aim is to prepare our graduates for a career in dance.  Members

of the dance faculty bring various perspectives to their teaching,

including modern dance styles that range from the traditional

Martha Graham-based technique to a more eclectic approach combining Limon, Cunningham, Horton and post-modern forms.

The Department of Dance offers two degree programs: the Bachelor of Fine Arts and the Master of Fine Arts.

There is no dance minor.  For those who wish to pursue their academic interests in addition to dance we offer a

dual degree program.
