Wind & Percussion Department
JURY REQUIREMENTS
The teacher of record can request a jury of any student in any course number.
139 or 140 and 219 or 220: one 12 minute performance exam during the freshman year, with the semester chosen at the discretion of the professor of record. Piano accompaniment highly encouraged, except for percussion*; divided jury of either woodwind or brass.
240: 20 minute performance exam before the appropriate brass, percussion, or woodwind faculty. 10 minutes must be with piano collaboration (except for percussion). Contrasting styles are required; orchestral or band excerpts can be used at teacher’s discretion. 240 must be passed by this faculty jury before 339 can be elected.
222: 12 minute performance exam before appropriate faculty at the discretion of the teacher of record.
340: 15 minute exam before divided juries (woodwind or brass); this exam will serve as senior recital approval, assessing whether the level is adequate for a recital performance. Repertoire for the recital is not required for this exam, but can be used, if so desired.
440: Senior recital.
425/426: senior recital or divided jury.
539: 15 minute exam before a divided jury (woodwind, brass, or percussion), or Concerto Competition.
540: Recital.
639: 15 minute exam before a divided jury (woodwind, brass, or percussion), or Concerto Competition.
891: 15 minute performance exam each semester before full Wind & Percussion Dept. faculty jury, except during semesters when a performance preliminary exam, Departmental Concerto Competition, or recital is performed. At the discretion of the supervising faculty member, after completion of one semester of 891, a student will have the option of participating in a mock job interview, mock oral preliminary exam, or teaching a mock master class. Students are encouraged to take 781 in preparation of any mock exam.
*all percussion juries will last 15 minutes
