How and When to apply
The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance is a highly selective professional school for the performing arts encompassing programs in music, dance, theatre, and musical theatre. As an undergraduate applying for admission, you should complete the University of Michigan undergraduate application. There is no separate application for music, dance, theatre or musical theatre applicants.
The University begins accepting applications in late summer. School of Music, Theatre & Dance applicants apply for the Fall term, with limited openings in Winter term. The School does not accept applications to Spring or Summer terms.
The priority deadline for the School of Music, Theatre & Dance is December 1. Look ahead though: each audition/interview date has a "must apply by" date associated with it and, for early auditions, these application deadlines may be earlier than December. These dates are listed under "Departments". Navigate to your instrument or program for the details.
Apply early. Since audition/interview schedules fill quickly in most programs, requests that are late can be very difficult to schedule. Please allow six to eight weeks for the processing of your application, from the time it is sent until you are contacted to schedule an audition. (You will receive an e-mail confirmation of your audition/interview date.)
Send all the required materials. (Upload all the items you can with the online application.) Missing materials or mistakes will significantly delay the processing of your application and subsequent scheduling of your audition and/or interview.
The School of Music, Theatre & Dance will continue to accept applications after December 1 as long as openings are available in the specific program to which you apply. Many programs will not accept applications after January 15 because of limitations in enrollment.
Receive a decision. Admission to all undergraduate programs in the School requires both a successful academic review and completion of an audition, portfolio, and/or interview, depending upon program requirements. All application materials will be considered in the final decision.
