AUDITIONS

Jazz Ensemble 2008Every undergraduate applicant to the School of Music, Theatre & Dance must demonstrate, by an in-person or recorded audition, portfolio, and/or interview, sufficient ability and potential to successfully pursue one of the degree programs of the School of Music, Theatre & Dance.  We strongly recommend auditioning or interviewing in Ann Arbor. If this is not possible, regional auditions/interviews, recorded auditions, and phone interviews are alternate methods of completing the audition/interview process.

It is in the student's best interest to submit the application as early as possible, but no later than the deadline. We receive hundreds of applications per year and audition appointments fill quickly.  In many cases, the deadline is December 1st.  Please refer to your specific departmental page for the official application deadline.  Auditions and interviews are by appointment and are scheduled only after receipt and review of the complete application materials.

Following the initial academic review, if your audition is approved, you will receive an email confirmation of your audition/interview date from the School of Music, Theatre & Dance Admissions Office.  Do not make travel arrangements until you have received written confirmation of your audition/interview date.

Audition requirements are unique to each area of study.  In addition to the instrumental or vocal audition requirements, applicants to Composition, Performing Arts Technology, Music Education, Music Theory, and Musicology have additional requirements that must be met.  Choose your area from the list below for the details.  Applicants will be asked to perform the repertoire specified, unless a substitution has been approved in advance. Questions or requests for repertoire substitution should be directed to the Auditions Coordinator, 734/763-6677.

The School of Music, Theatre & Dance has a policy of rolling admission, and qualified applicants may be offered admission approximately 4-6 weeks after each audition day.  Although a late March or April audition date is published for some programs and instruments, typically few openings remain in those programs and consideration will be for admission only. Applicants who wish to be considered for School of Music, Theatre & Dance merit awards MUST audition by March 6, 2009.
