Band Conducting and Pedagogy Worskhop
DATE:
June 20 - 25, 2010
INSTRUCTOR:
Michael Haithcock, Rodney Dorsey, et al.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
This is a teaching workshop for instrumental music educators/conductors of all levels
(K-12 through university/professional) with sessions on:
- Conducting
- Rehearsal Techniques
- Repertoire
The Advanced Conducting Track is open to six conductors selected by videotape audition. Selected conductors are given the opportunity to conduct a professional chamber winds ensemble for forty minutes each day. The repertoire is selected from the finest available music for the medium and conductors are expected to interact with the ensemble in a professional rather than educational manner. This unique format incorporates advanced conducting techniques, score study, and movement awareness exercises. Michael Haithcock, Director of Bands, and UM movement expert, Jerry Schwiebert will provide each participant specific methodologies for personal development. Interaction with the musicians will also provide valuable insight into the communication desired by professional performers.
Deadline for submission is May 1, 2010.
The Conducting Track is designed for anyone interested in improving their conducting and teaching skills. Participants will conduct the Symposium Wind Band each day; these six sessions will total fifty minutes of podium time. The Michigan Band Faculty and UM movement expert, Jerry Schwiebert will provide each participant specific feedback tailored to their current level of proficiency. Other sessions are taught by Michigan faculty in the areas of rehearsal techniques (jazz and concert band), score study, movement and expression, music education, and arranging. The first twenty-four applicants are accepted; no video is required.
The Observer Track is designed for the educator or undergraduate student interested in obtaing an exposer to a variety of conducting and teaching fundamentals. Observers will have the opportunity to attend all workshop sessions and participate in the Symposium Wind Band.
